Force Teams Compete at Surf Cup Aug 26, 2008
Force teams competed at the prestigious Surf Cup a few weeks ago. As most know, Surf Cup is one of the toughest tournaments to get in with high quality teams coming from not only around the country, but around the world. The competition is fierce and for our older teams, this is a tremendous opportunity for our players to also be exposed to College coaches who attend this event!
FORCE 92G BLUE
The Force 92 Blue Girls team has had quite a run in the last year. Even though they posted some very impressive results, they were not originally accepted into Surf Cup - even in the Gold Bracket. But when a team dropped out of the Super Group, the Force 92 Blue Girls skipped past the Gold bracket right into the Super Group. Even with a Las Vegas Showcase finalist showing and defeating the number 3 team in the country at the Houston Shootout, the Force team was still considered a long shot by some - but definitely not by the team.
The Force was the only NorCal U16 team to go undefeated in bracket play at Surf. They tied the number 5 team in the country, then drew the National runner-up So Cal Blues in the quarters. The Force got out early and were up 2-0, before letting SoCal Blues back in the game with 2 goals. They won in PK's, thanks to great goalkeeping by Emily Kruger- only allowing one PK out of 5!
The Force then played #10 in the country Surf, and won 2-1 in OT. They then lost the top ranked team in the nation, Slammers, 1-0 in the final. It was great run for the Force 92 Blue girls and they will no longer be underestimated.
Over 40 coaches attended the Surf games and have started contacting players. Impressive finishes at Surf, Las Vegas Showcase(finalist) and he Houston Shootout - has put the 92 Girls on the map. They have defeated 6 of the top 10 ranked teams in the last 6 months, and plan to ontinue this trend in the Far West Regional League.
FORCE 91G BLUE
The De Anza Force Blue 91 Girls, coached by Owen Flannery, were recently the first Northern California team in their 91-92 age group to ever play in the prestigious Surf Cup Championship game. The Force Blue 91's defeated teams from Colorado, Maryland, and Cal South to advance to the Surf Cup quarter-finals where they defeated their Cal North rival San Ramon Shock, 2-1. The semi-final game was a hard fought 1-0 win over the Vista Shockwave team visiting from Maryland. The Surf Cup Championship game between the Force Blue 91 and Surf White (ranked 2nd in the nation) ended with the Surf team taking the victory.
FORCE 90G BLUE
Force 90G Blue traveled to Surf Cup for the third time in the past four years. Competing in the U19G Gold division, Force 90G opened with an impressive 4-1 win against the Lady Predators from Boca Raton, Florida. Next up was Far West Regional finalist Eagles from Cal-South. Although Force 90 took an early lead with a goal in the first minute, the Eagles prevailed 3-1.
In the third game, Force 90G needed a 2-0 win for 9 points to guarantee it would advance to the semifinals. Leading 1-0 for most of the second half over the OJSC Strikers, Force 90G aggressively pushed forward, trying for that second goal. All hope vanished when the Strikers scored on a 35-yard strike that just slipped under the crossbar. Force 90G Blue had to settle for a 1-1-1 Surf Cup record, but with the added satisfaction that 65+ college coaches watched during the weekend’s games.
