Force 91 Girls Claims Second Straight CYSA State Championship May 04, 2009
The De Anza Force 91 Girls Blue team claimed their second straight Cal North State Cup Championship this past weekend by defeating their District II rival Juventus Destiny 4-0. The Force's first goal came early on a blistering 42 yard free kick by Shandon Rovetta right through the diving Juventus goal keeper's hands. Cheryl Kute then converted a Penalty Kick in the 16th minute to make the score 2-0. The third goal came from a low cross from Monique Rootsaert to the foot of Chelsea Braun who was unmarked inside the 18 yard box. The final goal of the game was an unassisted shot from the right side by Rootsaert over the Destiny goal keeper hands.
First year coach Curtis McAlister took over the Force 91 team last summer from Owen Flannery and together with Assistant Coach Alan Kute directed the team to Finalist finishes in both the Surf Cup Super Group and the Mustang Stampede Premier Bracket. The team then played in the very competitive Golden State Soccer League (GSSL) for the first time and finished in second place. The Force 91 girls will next focus on returning to the Far West Regional's this June to improve on their 2008 Quarter-Final result.
