SPARQ Testing
U.S. Soccer will bring world famous SPARQ testing to the Force Club in Fall 2008 / Spring 2009

U.S. Soccer Partners With Nike and SPARQ Training to Provide Training Expertise For Academy Elite Youth Players / Clubs.

SPARQ Will Provide Physical Testing and Training Component to Players on Youth National Teams and All Development Academy Clubs!

As part of its commitment to provide elite youth players with the best possible
environment and tools for training and development, U.S. Soccer is partnering with Nike and SPARQ to enhance training for players on the men’s and women’s Youth National Teams and all clubs in the Development Academy. All athletes from the Youth National Teams and the Development Academy will be tested and each athlete’s test results and subsequent SPARQ Soccer Rating will serve as the foundation for a comprehensive individual program to focus training and track progress and improvement over time.  The program will then focus on elite players, girls and boys, from U12-U16 in the Force Club.

What is the Sparq Soccer Rating?

The SPARQ Soccer Rating is a proprietary, standardized method for evaluating match-relevant athletic and functional ability. It is a single number derived from performances on four soccer-specific physical tests of speed, power, agility and endurance capacity. The results serve as the foundation for individualized training programs.

“Partnering with Nike and SPARQ is another step in providing the absolute best atmosphere to improve the development environment for the elite soccer players in our national teams and in the Academy Clubs,” said U.S. Soccer Development Academy Director and Men’s National Team assistant coach John Hackworth. “We are excited about SPARQ training because it is another tool players can use to achieve their highest soccer potential.”

SPARQ stands for speed, power, agility, reaction and quickness, and is a training resource that uses a standardized method of testing to provide athletes with an assessment and training tools to help them improve. The standardized testing environment enables players to measure themselves against their peers and
international caliber soccer players.

Nike Athletes Using SPARQ:

  • Landon Donovan (MLS)
  • Kevin Durant (NBA)
  • Steve Nash (NBA)
  • Adrian Peterson (NFL)
  • Lindsay Tarpley (U.S. Women)
  • LaDanian Tomlinson (NFL)
  • Hope Solo (U.S. Women)
  • Abby Wambach (U.S. Women)

SPARQ trainers will test athletes at their local club and at the Development Academy Spring Showcase. Once tested, players receive an individualized program designed to provide meaningful training by addressing personalized areas of weakness and focus on areas of strength. The physical training element is focused on developing soccer athleticism, which is a major component of successful professional clubs’
programs, along with tactical and technical training.

Launched in the fall 2007 after a comprehensive review of the player development systems in the U.S. and across the world, the Development Academy will provide the best possible opportunity for players to develop. Teams in the Academy are required to train a minimum of three times a week, eliminating the growing trend of playing excessive games in lieu of consistent training patterns, while also playing relevant weekly matches at a high level against other teams in the program.

SPARQ SOCCER-SPECIFIC TESTING

Speed 20-Meter Sprint Linear Acceleration and Speed (High-intensity Running Breakaway speed, recovering from loss of possession)

Agility Arrowhead Agility Agility, Change of Direction, Postural Control, Speed Multi-directional nature of game means agility may be most important factor in physical profile

The Force Joins Its ‘Forces’ With VIP of Cupertino!
For the last 3 years, the VIP soccer program has served the special-needs community of Cupertino, West San Jose’, and Saratoga with the brilliant game of soccer. Force kids were instrumental in helping the Cupertino VIP program form in 2004. VIP is happy to provide a modified soccer experience for exceptional children that wish to play the world’s most popular game. The program creates an on-field relationship between players and local club soccer players that volunteer to staff VIP.

Force soccer player, Lindsay Dickerson has had a great experience working with the VIP program.  “The VIP Buddy program is great because it gives me the opportunity to work with and form a bond with a specific soccer player. All the soccer players in the program are either mentally or physically disabled, and the program is set up so that each week I help my specific buddy to improve not only in his soccer skills but also how he deals with the people around him—parents, coaches, siblings, and myself. Overall, it was a really good experience to watch as each week he grew—not only in his soccer skills but in his attitude as well.”

Every participant in the VIP program is assigned a player or two as an attendant; someone that encourages, instructs, and guides the special-needs player through the courses of the game. The needs of the participants include the emotionally, physically, and/or mentally challenged. In the case of non-seeing players, the clever adaptation necessary is a “beeper ball”, a ball that sends out an audible beep to help the players locate the ball. The special ball, coupled with an ambulatory sighted person(s) giving instruction, makes for a wonderful sporting experience. From time to time a VIP player will advance to a point where they can become mainstreamed and leave VIP to join AYSO or CYSA rec. level play. Without the synergy between the participants and attendants VIP could not exist.

Local Club and Recreational League soccer players are welcomed to participate as attendants to the VIP program. Young adults volunteer their time and energy in exchange for a heart-warming experience and valuable community service hours, necessary in many South Bay Schools, and also beneficial for college applications. Area players come to VIP with a fair amount of anxiety for the unknown, but leave with a newfound appreciation for their exceptional neighbors and a full heart. Art Zimmerman, the Cupertino VIP buddy coordinator, comments, ““Ambulatory players will get more out of volunteering then the put into it… it is very rewarding.”

Players at all levels are encouraged to contact Art Zimmerman, South Bay VIP buddy coordinator, at coachzim@sbcglobal.net The VIP season starts up again at Creekside Park on Sunday, March 25th from 1:30 – 3:00. Schedules are flexible to meet the needs of the youth soccer player. VIP needs you. Come out for one of the most rewarding experiences you’ll ever enjoy!

Force College Connection
Every year, the Force hosts a college night with visiting representatives of major colleges and universities. This year we are happy to announce that the following area coaches will speak to our college bound players on May 24th, 7:30 PM, at the Cupertino Quinlan Community Center:
  • Jerry Smith - Santa Clara Unversity
  • Cam Rast - Santa Clara Unversity
  • Craig Winans - San Jose State University
  • Owen Flannery - Menlo College
  • Artie Cairel - California State University at Monterey
  • Cheryl Owiesny - De Anza College
The Force College Information Guide for Players was written specifically to the student athlete to give an overview of the recruiting process.

The program will be expanded each year as Force players and parent alumni help us build our club's recognition at major U.S. colleges and universities.

Force ODP Night
Trying out for the Olympic Development Program is a major decision for many players. In addition to working with our players to help them prepare, the Force holds an information meeting prior to try-outs so that parents and players can get information about the selection process, and what happens AFTER you make the team. The club is fortunate to have many current and former ODP players and coaches as a resource to help with this program.
